Hypnosis can be traced back to cultural and religious rituals in many civilizations. Over 4,000 years ancient cultures and societies from ancient Egypt, to Greece, Rome,India and China have used techniques for self-healing that were what today we call hypnosis, hypnotherapy, and self-hypnosis.
Today doctors, nurses and healers of all sorts are aware of the powerful enhancement hypnosis and self-hypnosis techniques bring to their practices. Hypnosis is an altered mental state or a condition (also known as a trance state) in which from outside appearances they seem asleep, but in fact they are very aware and even more conscious than in normal waking state. In many medical and psychological texts it is defined as a wakeful state of focused attention and heightened suggestibility, with diminished peripheral awareness, where the subject experiences physical relaxation accompanied and induced by mental concentration. Believe it or not, we spend seven hours of every 24-hour day in a state of natural hypnosis. We enter this state just before going to sleep and upon rising, as well as in daydreams, meditation, and yoga.

The New Master Course in Hypnotism is one of the older books on hypnotism and clinical hypnosis on my shelf, and it has a great deal of helpful information and guidance. It is more of a text and reference than a self-help type of book, as so many newer books on hypnosis tend to be. Mr. Aarons is one of the foundations of the profession.
